About

Isette Schuhmacher is a research associate at the Center for Social Critique at the Institute of Philosophy.

Her research interests include social philosophy and political philosophy, critical theory, social theory, and the philosophy of history.

Isette Schuhmacher studied German and Philosophy in Potsdam, Berlin and New York. She completed her master's degree with a thesis on progress according to Adorno at the Humboldt University in Berlin.

In her dissertation "Crisis Society" Isette Schuhmacher deals with the systematic elaboration of a socio-philosophical approach to crises. The thesis develops an understanding of multiple social crises in a spatially-synchronous on the one hand, and temporally-diachronic on the other, thus unfolding the - often neglected - socio-theoretical implications of the concept of crisis. In this respect, the concept of "crisis society" illuminates the simultaneity of multiple crises, but is not exhausted therein. While taking into account the multiple dynamics and developments of crises that challenge societies and their ability to cope with persistent, repetitive or even protracted crisis constellations, blockades of sustainable transformation are measured. Finally, the dissertation looks at the ecological crisis as a special application and type of a "crisis society".
